Persius Privately printed for Edward Craven Hawtrey 1845
This is one of Hawtrey's own copies with his bookplate. A similar book is listed - with all points present and described on page 45, item 443 in Professor Morgan's Bibliography of Persius. Professor Morgan died on March 16th 1910. Just before he was overtaken with illness, he presented the whole of his extraordinary 'Persius Collection', to Harvard College Library. (The 'Morgan Collection',) which consisted of editions, translations and writings, totalling 847 items from 1469 - 1906. Except this one.....that was presented to one of his star pupils.

The History of the World by Sir Walter Raleigh, large 4to 1st Edition, 1st Issue 1614 . It is not widely known that there were TWO editions printed in 1614 the 1st issue being suppressed by James I (James VI of Scotland) whilst Raleigh was in the tower. The King first suppressed the title page bearing Raleigh's image, then calling it "Too saucy for Princes" suppressed the whole book. He then called in the Bishop's and declared "Destroy them by fire....or I destroy YOU by fire". Thomas Brushfield, the 18thC celebrated antiquary declared there to be a "Plethora of 1614 editions in existence". He was right!...there was a second printing in 1614 except the maps in the 1st issue were engraved by William Hole, the celebrated cartographer. For the second printing, the maps were engraved by Renold Elstrack. Also the 1st issue has a pagination error showing pages in succession, 490, 491, 492, 491, 492, 493 etc...a point of issue found only in the first printing. there are only 3 recorded copies of this 1st issue, this copy although in poor condition (fully restorable) is believed to be the only complete copy.

Annals of Princess Elizabeth  by William Camden folio 3rd edition  1635 (The title page is in poor condition but quite restorable, at the foot of the title page it reads " Printed by Thomas Harper for Benjamin Fisher to be sold. at the sign of the Talbot"......... the 3rd edition should finish here with the date 1635 at the foot, but this edition continues "part of the impression to be ventrell to the daughters of John Minshew,  deceased. This is the John Minshew variant of which only two other copies are known to exist, both in America,  (one being in the Houghton Library - Harvard )

Recreations with the Muses, Sir William Alexander folio 1st edition 1637. The elaborate vignette shows two pillars with lots of folliage, and at the head, Royal Insignia. Sir William was a statesman and a poet, he was initiated into freemasonry by Charles I himself and was personal tutor to Prince Henry. The 'Recreations' consist of the four monarchy tragedies, being Darius, Croesus, Alexander and Julius Caesar, but then is added 'The Doomsday,' or the great day of the Lord's Judgement, (The Book of Hours) a 1st Edition of the completed works 1637. The 1st  Edition was published in 1614 consisting of only the first eight thousand lines, or the first "Eight hours", this is a 1st Edition of the completed work, the full twelve  hours , this is followed by a "Parenesis to Prince Henry, and finally ending with "The Book of Jonathan - A Heroic Poem" 1st Edition 1637, it states it is "The first book" and finishes abruptly but there was never any second or third book as Sir William died in 1640 without finishing it.

A Description of upto 300 Animals - Boreman 12th edition 16mo Edinburgh 1772 varient copy An interesting one this, the 1st edition was printed in 1730 consisting of 55 plates, 43 of which are printed both sides. all except one are paginated with the text, and this follows for all future editions. According to the reference on page 56 of British Natural History Books. The 11th edition was printed in Dublin 1774 and the 1st Edinburgh  edition was 1780. Not only is this varient 12th edition printed in Edinburgh in 1772, but it also has a total of 209 plates printed on one side of the sheet only, a reference to which cannot be found as there is no 12th Edinburgh 1772 edition on record.......SOLD
